Companies are increasingly migrating applications to the public cloud or developing new software directly as cloud-native, tailored to leverage the capabilities of the public cloud. However, many organizations still have numerous traditional workloads that cannot easily be adapted to cloud-native architectures or for which a cloud-native approach offers no real benefit, as they would not utilize its advantages. This raises the question of whether the benefits of the public cloud can also be leveraged with traditional, VM-based applications.
Many companies are hesitant to migrate applications to the cloud using a “lift-and-shift” approach while retaining their VM-based architecture. One concern is that operating virtual machines in the public cloud may not necessarily be more cost-effective. Additionally, organizations must rethink existing architectures, such as network setups, security concepts, and other areas like backup and monitoring.
