At its annual conference, Nutanix presented itself as a secure choice for enterprise cloud and virtualization, featuring innovations like a new Kubernetes platform. Alongside announcements about new features in the “Nutanix Cloud Platform” and the release of version 6.8 of its “Acropolis Operating System,” Nutanix used its .NEXT event to introduce additional services such as a Kubernetes platform, a curated GPT service, an AI partner program, a PaaS partnership, and enhancements to its Project Beacon. Nutanix’s motivation is clear: to show prospective customers in the virtualization and enterprise cloud markets that it can meet not only traditional hypervisor and hyper-converged storage needs but also a wider range of advanced requirements.
A major area of focus for Nutanix is containerized applications. Competitor VMware has long offered VMware Tanzu, a comprehensive platform integrating Kubernetes and development-oriented services directly within the VMware stack. Nutanix has so far not engaged in this space — but aims to change that with its new Nutanix Kubernetes Platform (NKP), which delivers a CNCF-compliant Kubernetes service. This offering is based on Nutanix’s December 2023 acquisition of D2iQ and its D2iQ Kubernetes Platform (DKP).
